Honestly a big moral of ‘Pearl’ is the entire situation with Pearl and her German mother, especially the mother being a hundred percent aware she was a violent psychopath.

I’m not saying she necessarily should have had Pearl committed before all the murdering because I’m sure mental health care was horrifying in 1918… especially something state run because they obviously couldn’t afford private… but at least don’t push her over the edge. Hell, maybe just let her leave. Sure she couldn’t run the farm without her, but it’s better then having a ticking time bomb on it.
